Harris' “Conclave” novel from 2016
Plot
When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with presiding over one of the world’s most secret and oldest events, the selection of a new Pope, he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the very foundations of the Catholic Church. Cardinal Benitez will deliver his keynote address in Spanish. It’s a little hard to believe that all the other cardinals can easily understand him. This is a faulty assumption. All cardinals are fluent in Latin by default, and many speak Italian in other conversations in the film.
Greetings again from the dark
All these languages belong to the Romance language family, so it is not difficult to assume that most cardinals will understand Spanish… Sister Agnes: Although we sisters are supposed to be invisible, God has nevertheless given us eyes and ears… Mentioned in The Saad Truth: My Review of Conclave (Film) – Wokeism Destroys Everything (2024). Allegri: Miserere Performed by Capella Musicale Pontificia Sistina, Massimo Palombella Courtesy of Deutsche Grammophon GMBH Licensed to Universal Music Operations Ltd. It feels like it’s been a while since we’ve had an old-fashioned, serious, suspenseful, "big" a dramatic film with big movie stars.
As the film opens, the beloved Pope has just passed
Well, that’s exactly what director Edward Berger, fresh off his Oscar-winning ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT (2022), offers in his latest. Writer Peter Straughan (TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY, 2011) adapted Robert Harris’ 2016 novel, and the result is a crowd pleaser that may earn some Academy Awards. Ralph Fiennes gives what may be his best performance to date. And that’s what can be said about the acclaimed actor, who excelled in the past in such films as SCHINDLER’S LIST (1993), NEUSTÁLE GARDNER (2005), IN THE BRIGS (2008), VEľKÝ SPLASKA (2018) and MENU (2022). His impressive career is only enhanced by this latest role as Cardinal Lawrence, saddled with the heavy burden of facilitating the titular conclave charged with electing a new pope.
Either way, Luciano Msmuati’s Cardinal Adivemi is a victim of Tremblay’s actions
and as they say, “let the games begin.” Of course, all these games are about political maneuvering and power struggles and behind-the-scenes promises. Director Berger chooses to show us very little of the actual negotiations, instead exhibiting different iterations of loyalty during each subsequent secret (obviously) vote. In the cramped walls of the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel, Cardinal Lawrence' He mostly spends his time researching tips, berating others for their behavior, and dealing with the outsize egos of the few being considered (including himself). Stanley Tucci plays Cardinal Bellini, who pretends he doesn’t want the job while campaigning as a 'progressive' the voice the church needs now. John Lithgow is Cardinal Tremblay, one of the most assertively ambitious people who may or may not have deliberately undermined the work of another.
she kept her 'place' and significantly influence the process
Cardinal Tedesco, played by Sergio Castellitto, is the most outspoken in his desire to return the church to its old ways (Latin Masses forever!), which he believes is right. Bryan F O'Byrne plays O'Malley, Lawrence’s assistant, and yet, despite all these men, it’s Isabella Rossellini as Sister Agnes who can shoot the (figurative) fire out of her eyes. She is stunning and memorable in her limited role. Soon a big surprise arrives in the form of Cardinal Benitez (Carlos Diehz) of Kabul, who was the last named previous pope and unknown to the others. As a novel, it can be a real page-turner, and yet the film never rushes from one moment to the next.
