He’s smart
He’s attractive. He’s Dexter Morgan, America’s favorite serial killer, who spends his days solving crimes and his nights committing them. During Season 8, Angel Batista wasn’t always played by David Zayas. His son David Zayas Jr.
Dexter Morgan: I lived in darkness for a long time
fills in for his father in some shots, as the two look strikingly alike. Seen in the first season, Dexter has a large scar on his left side. Later, in the second season, the scar moved to his right side, leaving his left side unmarked.. Over the years, my eyes adjusted until the darkness became my world and I began to see…

Main theme song written by Rolf Kent, performed by Rolf Kent. After four episodes, I’m ready to declare this the best show on TV right now, one that could one day join the likes of _The Sopranos_ and the first season of _Twin Peaks_ as a contender for second-best TV show ever (behind the incomparable _Buffy the Vampire Slayer_; the series is co-produced and written by former Buffy writer Drew Z. Greenberg, and the cast includes Buffy/Angel’s mainstay Julie Benz). Dexter is a sociopath, a man without human feelings, and therefore has no natural, internal moral compass, and he has an insatiable thirst for blood that drives him to kill.
Another thing the show does brilliantly is to move in parallel at different speeds
But he had the great grace of being the adopted child of a police officer who (as we see in great flashbacks) successfully instilled in him a comprehensive moral code that he adheres to on a strictly intellectual level. It’s a brilliant concept (which I assume comes from the novels it’s based on) that allows the writers to explore the nature of moral behavior and what it means to be human (Dexter is, in a way, an alien). There’s a main, obvious, season-long plot arc (a game of cat and mouse between Dexter and a serial killer), and a secondary arc involving Dexter’s sister’s police career. The first handful of episodes feature a very strong, completed arc involving one of Dexter’s police colleagues and a local crime boss, while two of the four episodes so far also feature a standalone story that ties in between (and plays off) the ongoing ones.
The cast and production are great
I saw the future of how TV season structuring works, and this is it. While the writing isn’t quite up to the brilliance of the best of _House_, it was excellent. The only reason you might not want to watch this utterly brilliant show is the frequent use of extremely graphic imagery: there were probably more severed body parts shown in these first four episodes than in the first four episodes of any other TV show on the air combined. If you can stomach that, tune in for a mesmerizing look at what makes us human — or inhuman.
