Plot
Psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud invites C.S. Professor Lewis to discuss the existence of God, Freud’s unique relationship with his daughter and Lewis; his unusual relationship with his best friend’s mother. Anthony Hopkins had played C.S. Lewis in Zemlya syena (1993). Lewis searches for the gospels while a woman posing as his wife leads him to bed over the phone. The film is set in 1939, but Lewis did not marry Joy Davidman Gresham until 1956.

This fictional meeting between the pioneering psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud (Anthony Hopkins) and the author CS
Lewis (Matthew Goode) at the start of World War II, when the first German bombers arrive in England, does not challenge the audience to ask themselves who they are. tries to figure out, while simultaneously challenging themselves about human nature and whether God exists (Freud the atheist; Lewis the believer). Adapted from a play by Matt Brown, the material is poorly translated to the screen, not allowing for 15 minutes of alone time with the two characters in the session, constantly switching back and forth between a few background moments from each character, or some current situation with the bombing threat, or Freud’s ill health requiring constant care. his daughter, about whom we get some tense revelations about her relationship with the ruler’s father. And they tried really hard to make it a plot twist when it came to this character and his secretary, which was annoying – especially when you know that until then Freud had not condemned homosexuality. moral issue, but he didn’t want them anywhere near it (read Paul Rozen’s work on him).
This is expected to be psychoanalysis rather than a strange chat between famous authors of opposing views
For the life of me, because it wasn’t actually a session, I still have no idea what Lewis was doing there. The verbal duels are the moments we expect, there are so many interesting bits and exchanges between them, but overall it falls apart because either the dialogue isn’t that great; the editing makes it look like a tennis match – there’s not a single moment for a monologue or any plot sequence; and the constant detour of past moments tries to build some character or show some background, but it’s all engaging and tiring. A film that works with such ideas and challenges about humanity, God, faith and human relationships, while simultaneously opposing or supporting everything it should be. some coherence between the action and dialogue to create something that we, the audience, might have questioned or not thought of. You have to create excitement, even if those issues aren’t that exciting (to some), and keep them "boring" game format without distractions. If there’s one play-film adaptation that captured this feeling perfectly, it was “The Sunset Limited,” starring Samuel L.
Jackson and Tommy Lee Jones
The simple action set in a small apartment and the brilliance of the intricate dialogue make for a thrilling and mind-blowing experience. Hopkins and Goode don’t have the same dynamic, despite their strong performances.
